Malevolent household and landscape spirits afflicting the north of England, curdling milk, tangling hair, and tormenting livestock. Unlike the helpful brownie, a boggart cannot be appeased — only avoided. Some are tied to specific lanes, bridges, or boggy hollows, making certain crossroads dangerous at night.
