Prophesied at birth to bring ruin to Ulster, Deirdre chose the warrior Naoise over the king who claimed her, fled with him to Scotland, and was lured back under a false promise of safe conduct. Naoise was killed. Deirdre, refusing every comfort, dashed her head against a stone rather than live without him.
