Beasts

Griffin

Britain (heraldic)

A lion-bodied, eagle-headed guardian of treasure, enemy of horses, and one of the great beasts of British heraldry. Its talons were said to detect poison by changing colour. Medieval bestiaries treated it as real; its image appears on coats of arms, city crests, and pub signs across the country.
