Hereward the Wake

The last great English rebel against the Norman conquest, Hereward held out in the Isle of Ely long after all others had submitted. His raids deep into Norman territory became legendary, and later tales credited him with a charmed sword and supernatural cunning. Whether he died in battle or vanished into the fens, no chronicle agrees on his fate.
