Kelpie of Loch Garve
A distinctive kelpie legend from Loch Garve in Ross-shire, Highland Scotland, notable for its unusually compassionate resolution. Unlike most kelpie tales, this story describes a water horse that falls genuinely in love with a woman he has abducted, taking her to his underwater realm at the loch's bottom. Realising she missed warmth and firelight, the kelpie transformed into a horse and sought out a master stonemason, agreeing to spare the mason's life in exchange for building an underwater chimney and fireplace. The pact was honoured — and to this day a section of Loch Garve never freezes over, attributed to the heat from the kelpie's chimney below. The legend is one of the few in the Scottish water-horse tradition with a narrative of mutual obligation rather than malice.
