Manannán mac Lir
Isle of Man
Manannán mac Lir is the sea god, ruler of the Otherworld, and first king of the Isle of Man in Gaelic mythology — an island named in his honour. He protected the island by concealing it in mist from invaders and is said to have moved across its hills as three legs joined at the thigh, spinning like a wheel — the image behind the Isle of Man's triskelion symbol. His sacred hill is South Barrule, where he accepted annual tribute from the Manx people. Manx National Heritage commemorates Laa Columb Killey as his associated festival. He wields the sword Fragarach ('The Answerer'), which could cut through any armour, and owns a self-navigating boat and a cloak of invisibility.
