The Selkie

County Donegal, Ireland

The rón — seal-folk of Irish and Scottish tradition who shed their skins to walk as humans on land. Along the Donegal coast, many families claim selkie ancestry. A fisherman who hides a selkie woman's skin keeps her on land as his wife, but if she ever finds it hidden, she will return to the sea without a backward glance.
